Course Descriptions for Academy classes:
Medical Skills:
This is a required entry-level (9th grade) course for the AMA
The purpose of this class is to provide the student with practical, generic skills that are needed for a health occupation. And although, these skills are applicable to some health occupations, they are not designed to prepare the student for any one specific health occupation. The focus of the class will be on basic communication skills for health care professionals, services provided by various health care facilities, types of health occupations, infection control techniques, legal and ethical issues, as well as various other topics. Basic skills, such as, handwashing, vital signs and body mechanics will be taught. The student will be introduced into medical abbreviations and their meanings.
Health Science 2:
This is a required course (10th grade) for the AMA
The purpose of this class is to provide the student with information and knowledge of the different health career options available to them. Students will learn about the many types of health care delivery systems and various health occupations. Students will be exposed to guest speakers in various health careers and will also have opportunities to explore different health options through job shadowing. Communication skills, learned in Medical Skills class, will be fine tuned with opportunities for role-playing and learning proper documentation skills needed for health care situations. Safety practices will be taught. Patient confidentiality, HIPPA laws, & the patient bill of rights will be stressed. Wellness and Disease concepts, infection control measures, computers and health care , and employability skills are also emphasized in this class.
Health Science 1:
The Academy is student is required to take Health Science 1 or A & P during their 11th grade as a part of the AMA
The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the information and knowledge of basic medical skills, which will be needed for an entry- level health care position. This course is also intended to be a building block for the Academy, where during the student’s senior year, some classroom time will be spent in a clinical setting. This course will offer basic anatomy and physiology of the body systems, as well as diseases of those systems. More advanced medical terminology will be learned and used. Students will be able to identify and explain factors relating to the transmission of disease. Students will be able to identify cell structures and see cell abnormalities relating to different diseases. There will be opportunities to observe and participate in some medical activities prepared by the Academy.
Nursing Assistant 3/ Home Health Aide (3 block course)
This is a possible elective course for the AMA student’s area of study during their senior year in the Academy – they must choose 1 of the 3
This course is intended to prepare the student for skills and knowledge necessary in becoming a nursing assistant or home health aide. This class prepares the student to sit for the State of Florida, Certified Nursing Assistant certification exam upon completion of the program. The student will learn skills and topics, specific for a nursing assistant. Such as written communications needed for the CNA, legal and ethical issues for the nursing assistant and safety and comfort issues of the patients. Also, the student will learn the necessary skills needed for the certified nursing assistant exam, including bathing skills, transfer skills, assisting with meals, assisting with dressing, following isolation protocols and many more. This class has an extensive clinical time, and students will have certain requirements that need to be met prior to their clinical.
Allied Health Assisting 3 (2 block course)
This is a possible elective course for the AMA student’s area of study during their senior year in the Academy – they must choose 1 of the 3
This course is intended to prepare the student for the skills and knowledge necessary in becoming an unlicensed physical restorative aide, a physical therapy aide or a unlicensed occupational therapy aide. The student will receive a certificate of completion when finished with the program,. The student will learn the necessary skills needed for these positions such as, the proper use and care of physical therapy equipment, the proper use of crutches, walkers and canes, and the use of gait belts for transfers. The student will also learn to assist with range of motion, dressing skills, food preparation for the patient and many other related skills. This class will also have extensive clinical time in a rehabilitation or hospital setting. Certain requirements, such as a physical, TB skin test, and others will need to be met prior to the clinical opportunities.
First Responder 3 (2 block course)
This is a possible elective course for the AMA student’s area of study during their senior year – they must choose 1 of the 3
This course is intended to prepare the student with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to become a first responder and ambulance attendant. The student will receive a certificate of completion when the program is finished. In this course the student will learner the roles and responsibilities of a first responder. The student will be able to determine and record vital signs of a sick/injured person, use medical identification devices appropriately, conduct a primary assessment of the patient, recognize and control bleeding as well as many other first aide skills. The student will also be able to recognize and treat injuries according to the body systems and care for patients with special needs. The student will learn the basics of triage and recognize life -threatening situations. Students will have clinical time, possibly in an ER or job shadowing with EMT’s or paramedics. Students will be expected to participate and help plan a school, mock disaster drill. Certain requirements will need to be met, such as obtaining basic CPR, prior to clinical.
Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries:
This is an elective course, highly recommended for the Allied Health Assisting 3, and First Responder classes.
This course will enable students to develop knowledge of the anatomy and physiology related to athletic injuries and skills related to the nature, prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The course content will also include, basic conditioning methods, identification techniques, rehabilitation of the athlete, career opportunities in athletic training, and the benefits of participation in a training program. This course will have guest speakers relating to the above topics, will possible job-shadowing opportunities for students interested in these careers.
First Aid and Safety:
This is an elective course, highly recommended for the Allied Health Assisting 3 and the First Responder classes.
This course enables the student to develop the necessary knowledge and skills needed to perform basic first aid measures and adult, child and infant CPR. The student will also learn about community resources and services available and how to access theses services. The student will learn about careers in this area, as well as public service opportunities. This class will promote safety and prevention measures, so as to avoid first aid situations whenever possible. The students will also be able to handle minor emergencies and learn how to prevent the transmission of communicable diseases. This course will have guest speakers in the area of related expertise and students may be able to participate in a mock disaster drill.
